Early Years

Our Early Years department consists of our Nursery and Reception classes. Early Years itself caters for up to 24 children in three groups of eight. Our Reception class is usually ten children.

We admit children into our Early Years department from the age of two. They all have either an Education Health and Care Plan or are in the assessment process. Some of the children start on a part time basis and as they settle in gradually build up to full time, for others starting full time straight away is more appropriate.

When the children first come to school parents are invited in with them to explain to the staff all about their child's likes and dislikes. They also meet the school nurse to pass on important medical information.

Parents are welcome into school at any time. Some parents like to come in every day until they are happy that their child has settled and we have gained their trust. This is fine and very understandable. Some parents like to phone us during the day to see how their child is coping this is of course also acceptable.

We also run parents meetings on a variety of subjects to which all are welcome.

The Early Years department at Victoria School is a lively place always buzzing with activity.

Our aim in Early Years is to give all of the children a wide variety of experiences and activities both in school and the wider community. We base our curriculum on the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and plan according to the child's individual needs.

For some the major emphasis may be on their Numeracy and Literacy skills. Others may have a greater emphasis on motor development and self-help skills. Many need to learn to communicate. Some will use speech whilst others may learn to sign or use gesture to communicate their needs. All children have access to communication aids and computers as appropriate.

Some of the children who start at Victoria during these early years will remain here for the whole of their school life. Others may move to another special school as their needs change. Some may also move onto a mainstream school on either a full or part time basis.

At Victoria we all work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes our parents to ensure that each child's individual needs are met.

But above all we aim to make the children's first experience at school an extremely enjoyable one. For more information see the booklet below:
