Primary Department

Our Primary Department in divided into two Key Stages.

The number of classes can vary according to the number of pupils. Currently we have two Key Stage 1 classes, one mixed Key Stage 1/2 class and five Key Stage 2 classes.

The children move from the Reception class into a Key Stage 1 class. The children in Key Stage 1 follow a curriculum which continues to be based on the Early Years Curriculum (Prime and Specific areas of learning and the Characteristics of Effective Learning)) and is topic based. Here they continue to build on the skills they have already mastered.

There is a strong emphasis on Communication, Language and Literacy and Maths.

The development of the children's physical skills is also extremely high on the agenda and partnership working is key. We believe in developing our children's confidence in all situations by teaching them a range of strategies that will enable them to flourish.

At the start of Year 3 the children move into a Key Stage 2 class. Here the curriculum changes and is planned using the National Curriculum as the basic framework. This is differentiated to meet the needs of the individual children, it continues to be topic based.

We believe that enjoyment is fundamental to achievement and there is a strong emphasis on active learning throughout the department.

We offer an extensive range of visits and enrichment activities throughout the Primary Department. These are far too extensive to list in total but include horse riding, visits to the theatre, farms, West Midlands Safari Park and Cadbury World. In KS 2 children have the opportunity for a residential experience at Dodford Children’s Farm. We also have a great many visitors to school, for example theatre groups and musicians.

We also share a variety of joint activities with Cherry Oak School, for example swimming galas and Teddy Bears Picnics.
